For the last 30 days, across ten articles, I've used the phrase 'conversation commerce' without defining it. That was intentional. The phrase was doing work — showing up in diagnostic questions, in brief gaps, in measurement blind spots — before anyone needed a definition.
Today is the 99-day mark before 9.9. And this is the piece where the phrase gets defined — properly, in four parts, with everything that flows from it.
Conversation commerce is the buying behaviour where the shopper resolves the decision to purchase inside a chat conversation and completes the purchase from inside that same conversation. WhatsApp Commerce is the specific case where the entire journey runs inside WhatsApp — discovery to checkout to recovery.
It is not a chatbot. It is not a support channel. It is not a broadcast list you send promotions to.
Conversation commerce is what happens when the buying decision — the moment of hesitation, the pre-cart question, the price check, the "does this come in my size" — moves off the product page and into a conversation. And when the brand is present in that conversation in a way that resolves the hesitation and closes the purchase without ever asking the shopper to go somewhere else.
This has been building in APAC for the last two years. Shopee chat, Lazada chat, Instagram DMs, brand WhatsApp lines — shoppers have been moving their pre-purchase questions into chat surfaces at scale. The brands that treated those surfaces as support channels answered the question and sent the shopper back to the product page. The brands that treated them as revenue surfaces answered the question, added the item to cart, and completed the purchase inside the conversation.
The difference in conversion rate between those two approaches is large. The difference in cart recovery rate is larger. And the difference in what the marketing intelligence layer can see — and therefore brief — is the largest of all.
The Four Parts of WhatsApp Commerce
The first layer of WhatsApp Commerce is an AI agent trained on the brand's catalogue, voice, pricing, and policy. Unlike a chatbot, it handles unscripted questions, recommends contextually, escalates intelligently, and feeds structured signal back to marketing intelligence in milliseconds.

The trust built in the conversation has to be rebuilt in the email.
